Find your Viking outdoor grill by series
Two things separate one generation of Viking grill from the next, and you can check both without a tool. Press a knob in and watch: an element that glows silently is a 5 Series, and with the power off it has to be match-lit rather than lighting itself. A click instead means one of the earlier grills — a button beside each knob makes it a T-Series, running off a 9 V battery; lights in the canopy and no buttons make it an E-Series, which runs off the mains.
01 Before anything else
Where the rating plate is
The plate carries the model, the serial and the gas the grill was set up for. It is the authority; a series name is only a shortcut to it.
- Underneath the drip tray. Pull the tray out of the cabinet and turn it over. This is the usual one, and the one people miss because they are looking at the front of the grill.
- On the heat shield behind the front panel. Viking’s installation guide names both positions, and says a grill may carry the plate in either.

Names are Viking’s own. The prefixes and the plate positions on each page come off the manufacturer’s installation and use-and-care guides, not off a parts listing.
- 5 Series VQGI and VQGFS · igniters glow, and the grill has to be plugged in
- T-Series and E-Series The earlier grills · both click — a T-Series off a 9 V battery, an E-Series off the mains
