Regulator, hose and manifold: why the whole grill goes soft
One weak burner is a burner. Every burner weak together is what feeds them, and that is a different visit: the regulator sets the pressure, the manifold shares it out, and both are matched to the fuel named on the rating plate. Viking Repair Experts Los Angeles measures before it replaces — (213) 600-7131.

What the signs mean
| What you see | What it usually is |
|---|---|
| Every burner low from the first minute, hood shut | A supply question rather than a burner question. Inlet and manifold pressure are what get measured here, both of them under full load with everything alight. |
| Heat fell away after a cylinder was changed | On propane the cylinder has a flow-limiting device that improper lighting can trip, and a cylinder near the end may not hold the pressure high heat asks for. |
| The regulator at the back is hard against the cabinet | It works by a flexible diaphragm, and Viking asks that it touch neither the grill body nor anything around it. Something leaning on it is enough to hold it down. |
| It has never made full heat since the day it went in | Installation, not wear. Undersized supply pipe, a grill left out of level, or a line kinked behind the island all read the same way from the front. |
What sets the pressure
Viking is absolute about one thing: a gas line is never connected straight to the grill. A regulator has to be fitted, and the codes want the one that came with the appliance. That regulator and the orifices along the manifold are tuned together for the fuel printed on the rating plate, which is why fuel is a parts question and not an adjustment.
The figures behind it belong to a technician with a gauge. Natural gas runs to a maximum inlet of seven inches of water column, propane to fourteen with eleven under full load. Troubleshooting adds a floor: five inches at a natural gas inlet, four at the manifold with every burner alight.
The checks that come before a part
Low heat has a queue of causes ahead of the regulator, worked through in order. Foil anywhere in the grill. A grill left out of level, which Viking calls critical, since combustion goes erratic with it. Too short a preheat — ten to fifteen minutes on the main burners with the hood closed, three on the ProSear. A supply line kinked, damaged or too narrow. Blocked burners, and an air shutter out of adjustment.
Then the regulator: free of anything pressing on it, right for the fuel in use, and on propane with the flow limiter reset before anyone prices hardware.
With the grill cold, the gas off and the knobs at OFF
- Knobs to OFF and the supply or cylinder valve closed before you go behind the grill.
- Look at the regulator: nothing stacked against it, nothing resting on it, nothing pinning it to the wall.
- Take out any foil that has been laid over the racks or under them.
- On propane, work out whether the cylinder is close to empty before anything else is suspected.
Stop there. Anything behind a panel, inside the gas path or downstream of the regulator is a job for a technician — call Viking Repair Experts Los Angeles on (213) 600-7131.
Asked on the phone
Can the grill be converted from propane to natural gas?
With a conversion kit from Viking and a qualified technician, not with a setting. Both the regulator and the manifold orifices are built around the fuel on the rating plate. A permanently plumbed propane line uses a 4/11 regulator whose plunger reads NAT or LP, and never more than one regulator in the run.
Why was the grill fine until the cylinder was changed?
Because the cylinder brings its own safety device. Lighting out of sequence can trip the flow limiter inside the valve, which throttles what reaches the grill. Viking resets it by shutting every burner control, closing the cylinder valve, waiting half a minute, then reopening very slowly and relighting.
